Growth and Dry Matter Accumulation of Okra (<i>Abelmoschus esculentus</i> L.) as Influenced by Different Plating Pattern Under Okra - Cowpea (<i>Vigna unguiculata</i> L.) Intercropping

Abstract: Compared to sole cropping, intercropping systems can more efficiently use the existing resources which ultimately lead to improved plant growth and dry matter accumulation. So, most of the farmers in developing countries can follow the intercropping systems with high yielding crop combinations. The experiment was carried out at the Crop Farm of Eastern University, Sri Lanka in 2018 to investigate the growth and dry matter accumulation in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) as influenced by different planting patt… Show more

“…In general, the values of specific root length (SRL) in cm/g root DW and the root length density (RLD) in cm/cm 3 were remarkably high especially in +M plants as compared to values published for okra plants. The root diameter was comparable to that found in published studies [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ].…”

“…We speculate that plant species with a high MD, such as okra, may show root morphological responses to AMF colonization different from that of plant species with lower MD, such as most grasses or tomatoes. The higher values of SRL and RLD in our study compared to previously published values [ 33 , 34 , 35 ] could be attributed to the age of the plant at the time of RLD measurement. We measured the root parameters 3 months after cultivation while the other studies measured the parameters 1–2 months after cultivation.…”

“…The shortest plant heigh recorded by intercropping than sole cropping might be associated with high competition of minerals and nutrients by intercrops than the sole cropped plants. In contrast to this result, different research verified that the vegetative growth mainly plant height and leaf area index are enhanced by intercropping than sole cropping systems [24,25].…”

“…From Table S5, we can see that comparison of nominal values of some important cropspecific model input parameters (most importantly, LAI t0 , LAI app , and LAI harv ) showed reasonable similarity for the studied (okra) and other crops (e.g. tomato), based on Fantke et al (2011Fantke et al ( a, b, 2014; Maduwanthi and Karunarathna (2019) and Salau and Makinde (2016). Hence, such data were applied as model input where okra-specific data were lacking or insufficient.…”
