Growth and physiological responses of four kiwifruit genotypes to salt stress and resistance evaluation

Abstract: In this study, four genotypes (Acva-1, Acva-2, Acva-3 and ZM-2) of Actinidia germplasm resources were grown in different salt concentrations (0, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 g L-1 NaCl). The growth, physiological and biochemical indicators were measured, and a graded scale was developed as the salt damage index (SDI) according to different damage symptoms in leaves. The results showed SDI increased gradually, and average number and length of new shoot decreased significantly. Three antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutas… Show more

“…To assess the biotechnological projection of DcAL s in commercial plants, we overexpressed DcAL4 and DcAL7 in kiwi ( A. deliciosa var Hayward). A. deliciosa is sensible to saline stress, showing a decrease in vegetative growth, accumulation of salts in the plant tissue, less development of the vegetative area and a lower photosynthetic yield under saline conditions [ 59 , 60 ]. Therefore, development of transgenic kiwi plants tolerant to salt stress could be a useful strategy to overcome this issue [ 61 ].…”

“…To do this, 100 ml of the salt solution was applied once per week, and the same volume of fresh water was applied in the control treatment. Plants salt damage index (SDI) was measured as described by Zhong et al (2021) , and the SDI grades were scaled into six levels from 0 to 5, according to different damage symptoms observed in the leaves after salt treatment. The classification standard of plant salt damage was as follows: Grade 0: no symptoms of salt damage; Grade1: about 1/3 of the leaves showed wilting phenotype at leaf tips and leaf margins; Grade 2: about 1/2 of the leaves showed wilting and burn phenotype at leaf tips and leaf margins; Grade 3: about 2/3 of the leaves showed burn phenotype and the burn area was about 1/3; Grade 4: all leaves showed burn phenotype and the burn area was more than 1/2; Grade 5: all leaves were scorched.…”
