Growth and trends in publications about abdominal wall hernias and the impact of a specific journal on herniology: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract: Growth in hernia papers is greater than the overall growth in PubMed. Articles on incisional hernia increased faster than did those on inguinal and umbilical hernias. The establishment and indexing of Hernia decreased the proportion of hernia publications in other journals. The core journals for herniology are Hernia, Surgical Endoscopy, and the British Journal of Surgery.

“… 3 The reported frequencies for umbilical hernia repairs are now similar to the previously reported North American figures. 21 Interestingly, a recent systematic review of the volume and growth pattern of scientific papers on abdominal wall hernias revealed that the number of articles with the words “umbilical hernia” in the title displayed a 2.6-fold increase between 1991–2000 and 2001-1020, 23 perhaps indicating a worldwide increase in the number of umbilical hernia repairs. The most striking increase (3.9-fold) was reported for the number of articles with the words “incisional hernia” in the title in that review.…”

“…Although the number of articles with the title word "umbilical hernia" increased 2.6-fold between the periods 1991-2000 and 2001-2010, there still appears to be a certain discrepancy between its importance and the attention it has received in the literature (7). In this paper, the nature of the umbilical hernias is reviewed, and the current options for their surgical repair are discussed.…”

“…In comparison, the overall growth of publications in PubMed was only 1.6‐fold during the same time period. In 1965 there was a single article discussing ‘incisional hernia’, but at the end of 2010 there were a total of 577 articles . The differences and advantages of laparoscopic ventral hernia repair (LVHR) and open ventral hernia repair (OVHR) have been debated since 1990, when LeBlanc described for the first time the laparoscopic approach , and the amount of reports indicating better results with the laparoscopic approach keep increasing.…”
