GROWTH AND YIELD OF OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) AS INFLUENCED BY FERTILIZER APPLICATION UNDER DIFFERENT CROPPING SYSTEMS

Abstract: Reduction in agricultural land with increasing population has led to a need to combined more than one crop to maximize limited land resources and thus require an improvement. A field experiment was conducted during the growing seasons of 2019 in two locations in Southwest Nigeria to assess the effect of cropping system and fertilizer application on the yield of okra intercropped with jatropha. The experiment was a split-plot arrangement in a Randomized Complete Block design, replicated three times. Fertilizer … Show more

“…Therefore, other microclimate factors also contribute significantly to the performance of the tested okra genotypes. During the growth period, okra requires a minimum temperature of 18 to 30°C (Makinde et al 2022).…”

“…The nutrients vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K are also abundant in them. The production of okra in Nigeria has increased due to its high nutritional value, as it provides important sources of protein, vitamin A and C, carbohydrates, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and other minerals, which are often lacking in people's diets [25,26]. Its medicinal abilities can be seen in the treatment of peptic ulcers and its use as a source of plasma replacement in body fluids [27].…”

“…The poor fertility status of soils coupled with issues of pests and diseases attacks constitute the major factors hindering optimum okra production [8]. Poor soil fertility condition was singled out as the major hindrance to okra production in Nigeria [9,10]. The cause of rapid fertility deterioration of Nigerian soils was attributed to incessant cultivation, deforestation and wrong farming methods [11].…”

“…The continuous uses of synthetic fertilizers have adverse effects on the environment [10]. This adverse effect coupled with the high cost and non-availability of inorganic fertilizers have forced peasant farmers to consider cheaper means of enhancing soil fertility for crop production [9,13]. Therefore, the need to carryout research on the response of crops to cheaper and readily available organic-based fertilizers is germane.…”
