Growth, feed conversion and body composition of fingerling stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) fed varying levels of dietary l ‐threonine

Abstract: An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of dietary l‐threonine on growth, protein utilization, threonine retention efficiencies, nucleic acid indices and body composition of fingerling Heteropneustes fossilis (6.6 ± 0.1 g; 10.9 ± 0.2 cm). Casein–gelatin based isonitrogenous (38% crude protein; CP) and isocaloric (15.3 kJ g−1 digestible energy; DE) amino acid test diets with six levels of dietary l‐threonine (0.75%; 1.0%; 1.25%; 1.5%; 1.75%; 2.0% dry diet) were prepared and hand‐fed to quadr… Show more

“…Amino acid profile of the trial diets was simulated to that of 450 g/kg chicken egg protein excepting the isoleucine. The trial diets were prepared as per the method detailed earlier Farhat and Khan (2017). The semi-moist diet (320 g/kg moisture) in the form of cubes (5 mm) were prepared and stored at −20°C.…”

“…In order to improve its culture, there is a dire need to develop nutritionally balanced feeds requiring information on the mineral requirement of this fish species. Although some fragmentary information on its protein, fat and vitamin requirement exists (Anwar & Jafri, 1992;Farhat & Khan, 2014, 2017Jhingran, 1991;Khan & Abidi, 2011;Khan & Abidi, 2014;Mohamed & Ibrahim, 2001;Siddiqui & Khan, 2009;Singh & Srivastava, 1984;Usmani & Jafri, 2002), no data are yet available on mineral requirement of this fish. In this study, an effort has been made to estimate the optimum dietary phosphorus requirement of this fish species for maximizing growth.…”
