Growth of M. avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis in Culture Is Enhanced by Nicotinic Acid, Nicotinamide, and α and β Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide

Abstract: We show enhancement of MAP growth by nicotinic acid, one of ≥4,000 tobacco-related molecules, its amide, nicotinamide and α and β NAD. Pure nicotine has no enhancing effect at the doses studies.

“…For example, we [17], [18], [20][22], [30], [31], and others [34], [35], have shown inhibition of MAP growth with medications used to treat “autoimmune” and “inflammatory” diseases. In the present study we show direct inhibition of mycobacterial growth by vitamins A and D in culture.…”

“…Many reports have suggested that topical application of NIC had several beneficial effects, especially anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and antimicrobial effects. 44,[66][67][68] In the present study, the vehicle group containing NIC presented comparable efficacy in ameliorating AD-like clinical symptoms, decreasing epidermis thickening and inflammatory cell infiltration, and downregulating the serum total IgE. In comparison with Protopic (containing 0.1% FK506), the dose of FK506 through the NIC-CS-NPs system could be decreased to at least 0.03% -approximately one-third the dose of Protopic.…”

“…Preclinical data exist that demonstrate the tuberculostatic and antiretroviral effects of niacinamide [46,47,48,49,50]. The effect against Mycobacterium tuberculosis can be explained with the inhibition of the class III NAD-dependent deacetylase-protein family (Sir2) [51], whereas the effect against HIV is based on the inhibition of the nuclear PARP [47,52].…”
