The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of different bedding materials on the, hematological and serum biochemical parameters of the broiler chickens. A completely randomized design was employed for the research in which the treatment were five bedding materials (rice hulls, groundnut hulls, wood shaving, sharp sand and control). The treatments were replicated three times each with ten birds in each experimental unit. The birds were brooded for two weeks before the experiment begin. The blood samples were collected at day 56 of experiment for hematological and serum biochemical analysis. There was no significant difference in the glucose, serum total protein, globulin, calcium, sodium, total bilirubin, conjugated bilirubin, and serum alanine transferase, but there was a significant difference in serum cholesterol, albumin, bicarbonate and serum aspartate transferase within the groups. The findings also indicated in the hematological parameters that bedding materials caused significant difference in the hemoglobin content, white blood cell count and mean corpuscular hemoglobin, but no significant differences in the other parameters (Heterophils, monocytes, basophils, lymphocytes, mean cell volume and packed cell volume) were seen. The results suggested that rice, hulls, groundnut hulls and sharp sand can serve appropriately as bedding materials for broiler production, with compatible effects on serum biochemical and hematological parameters.

To evaluate the impact of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) supplementation on pancreatic islet areas, alpha and beta cell populations, blood glucose levels, and lipid profiles in broilers, broilers were randomly assigned to two groups: a control group (T1) without SC and a treatment group (T2) supplemented with SC. Islet areas, alpha and beta cell counts, serum glucose and insulin levels, and lipid profiles were assessed. SC supplementation significantly decreased blood glucose levels compared to the control group. Additionally, HDL cholesterol levels were elevated in the SC-supplemented group. Although insulin levels remained unchanged, SC supplementation altered the correlation between pancreatic islet areas and alpha and beta cell populations, suggesting a potential influence on pancreatic islet function. Dietary supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae can improve glycemic control and lipid profile in broilers. These findings highlight the potential benefits of using SC as a dietary additive in broiler production.

The use of growth-promoting antibiotics has increased bacterial resistance, making made it urgent to look for options in nutritional supplementation with probiotics. This, in turn, can contribute to improving nutrition as well as welfare of broilers. Objective: To assess the effect of supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) on areas of islets of Langerhans and alpha and beta cells (α- and β-cells) in broilers by immunohistochemistry (IHC). To correlate areas of α- and β-cells in relation to pancreatic islet area, glucose, and insulin in both SC-supplemented and control groups. To correlate data obtained for triglycerides, total, HDL, and LDL cholesterol, and histological parameters of vacuolar assessment in central splenic arteriole and coronary arteries in both treatments. Materials and Methods: Two treatments were assessed: T1 (control group without probiotics; n = 10) and T2 (group treated with Saccharomyces cerevisiae; n = 14). Islet areas were measured according to the number of islets established per animal, with number of islets per individual equal to five for groups T1 (n = 10) and T2 (n = 14). Alpha and beta cells were measured by IHC (40x) with primary anti-glucagon (clone EP74) and anti-insulin (clone EP125) antibodies. Serum glucose and insulin were determined by spectrophotometry. Statistical analysis employed "t" tests for unpaired samples and Pearson’s correlation. Results: HDL cholesterol increased in T2 (14.54 ± 0.979) (p = 0.0365) as compared to T1 (12.20 ± 0.8424) mg/dL. Glycemia decreased in T2 (p = 0.01) (244.7 ± 7.5) vs. T1 (297.9 ± 21.18). Conclusion: Dietary supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CS) decreased serum glycemia without affecting insulin. It modified the correlation of areas of pancreatic cell population in islets of Langerhans and enlarged areas of α-cells vs. β-cells, thereby maintaining blood glucose homeostasis.
