Growth Promoting Activity of Annona muricata L. Leaf Extracts on Lactobacillus casei

Abstract: Soursop leaves are a source of phytochemical compounds, such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, hydrolyzable tannins, and acetogenins. These compounds can have several types of biological activities. Lactic acid bacteria can uptake phenolic compounds present in plants or fruits. The aim of the present work was to investigate the in vitro effect of hexane, acetone, methanolic, and aqueous extracts of soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) on the growth, motility, and biofilm formation of Lactobacillus casei, and to de… Show more

“…Annona muricata is known for its nutritional richness, containing vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds. It's conceivable that the nutritional profile of the fruit could indirectly influence the overall health and development of fish, including gonads (Meza-Gutiérrez et al, 2022). The bioactive compounds present in Annona muricata contain acetogenins, which have been studied for their potential health benefits (Mutakin et al, 2022).…”

“…Excessive levels of free radicals induced oxidative stress, that could cause tissue, DNA, protein, and lipid damage, necessitating the consumption of dietary antioxidant substances that aid the body in neutralizing these free radicals [46]. Flavonoids and tannins are phenolic chemicals, their availability in soursop extracts may be vital for the reported free radical scavenging actions [47]. e leaves of soursop contain therapeutic active substances (e.g., alkaloids, coumarins, tannins, flavonoids, carbohydrates, phenols, terpenoids, and saponins that have antioxidant activity [32].…”
