Growth Rates and Sunflower Production in Function of Fertilization with Biochar and NPK

Abstract: The use of alternative sources such as biochar can contribute to sustainable agriculture. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of fertilization with biochar in combination with mineral fertilizer, growth rates and yield of sunflower cv. Embrapa 122/V2000. The experiment was carried out in a protected environment of UAEAg/CTRN/UFCG in pots with a capacity of 20 dm 3 under a completely randomized experimental design, with treatments arranged in a factorial scheme (5 × 4) and four replicates cor… Show more

“…When applied to the soil as a conditioner and/or fertilizer, the poultry litter biochar increased the cation exchange capacity of a Yellow Red Latosol (Andrade et al, 2015), released phosphorus into the Ultisol, Oxisol and Entisol (Mendes et al, 2015a), improved the chemical properties of Ultisol, Oxisol and Entisol, increased soil pH reflecting the fact that the liming potential increased with increasing application rates of biochar (Mendes et al, 2015b), increased the adsorption of Zn in Ultisol and Entisol in the samples with pH 4 (Lima et al, 2017), improved the physical properties of Ultisol (Chaves et al, 2018) and promoted an increase in sunflower growth rates in the evaluation periods (Furtado & Chaves, 2018). However, there is little information about vertical and descending movement of the chemical elements by the profile of bio-carbon applied to agricultural soils.…”

“…The results suggest a nutritional excess caused by the use of wastewater in addition to the high doses of nitrogen and phosphorus. Furtado and Chaves (2018) observed that the application of NPK from 60% of the recommended dose caused the reduction of the absolute growth rate of stem diameter. Oliveira et al (2014), also observed that high doses of nitrogen promoted a reduction in the yield of eggplant crop by potentiating the harmful effects of water salinity and, therefore, decreased the agronomic efficiency of nitrogen fertilization.…”

“…As stated by these researchers, biochar rates below 30 t ha -1 provided the best results. Furtado and Chaves (2018) used poultry litter biochar in the sunflower crop and observed marked increases in the growth rates and yield of this crop. After comparing the effect of poultry litter and biochar from this biomass on the improvement of soil acidity and the growth of maize, Masud et al (2020) concluded that biochar was more efficient in correcting soil acidity, which provided greater nutrient absorption by maize plants.…”
