This article presents a proposal of project-based learning (PBL) as a didactic tool to meet the learning results (LR) proposed in the syllabus of the course Digital Design with Microcontrollers taught in the Electronic Engineering course of the Faculty of Engineering of the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas in Bogotá, Colombia. Students are provided with all the information related to the project, the design methodology, what is expected from the project, and how to evaluate the results of the work done. The proposed methodology shows the students that, from a practical project usually applied to the real environment, the theoretical information shown in the classroom is immediately applicable, increasing their motivation and willingness to work. In addition, another skill, teamwork, is reinforced by applying this type of teaching, since each member of the working group (three students per group) has a role in the project’s development. The low-cost development kit CY8CKIT-059 for PSoC5LP, manufactured by Infineon Technologies AG, is used in the course to apply the proposal. As a case study to demonstrate the methodology, the design of a data logger that stores humidity and temperature from a digital sensor, developed as one of several projects presented by students in recent semesters, is presented. When comparing the quantitative results obtained from the course in previous semesters with those obtained after applying the project-based learning methodology, a significant improvement can be seen: the percentage of students passing is significantly higher.

Nowadays, most of the automatized measurement processes are carried out by VISA (Virtual Instrument Software Architecture) compatible instruments, that execute the instructions provided by a host computer connected through wired standard buses, as USB (Universal Serial Bus), GPIB (General-Purpose Instrumentation Bus), PXI (PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation) or Ethernet. To overcome the intrinsic limitations associated to these wired systems, this work presents an instrumentation control system based on the IEEE 802.11 wireless communications standard. Intended for instruments having a USB control port, this port is connected to a gateway based on a compact Raspberry Single Board Computer (SBC) and thus the instrument can be connected to the host computer via Wireless Fidelity (WiFi), easily allowing the deployment of an ad-hoc instruments communication network in the working area or its connection to a previously deployed general purpose WiFi network. Developed under Python, the operation commands, wireless link protocol, and USB connection allow two modes of operation to provide system flexibility: a live mode, where commands are sent individually from the host computer to the selected instrument; and a standalone mode, where a full measurement process can be entirely downloaded in the gateway to be autonomously executed on the instrumentation. The system performance in both operation modes, distance of operation, time latencies, and operating lifetime in battery operation have been characterized.

Access to high-speed internet connectivity is limited in Sukkur, Pakistan, making alternative communication technologies essential for real-time monitoring and control of photovoltaic (PV) water pumping systems. This research paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a GSM-based remote data acquisition and logging system for a PV water pumping system in Sukkur. Leveraging abundant sunlight in the region, the proposed system utilizes 2G GSM technology for communication between the PV system and the remote monitoring station. A network of sensors captures key parameters, and the acquired data is processed, stored, and transmitted using 2G GSM, enabling remote access and real-time monitoring from any location with GSM coverage. The implemented system incorporates an Arduino microcontroller for core operation and employs an SD card for data logging. Real-time data logging allows for detailed tracking and analysis of system performance, facilitating troubleshooting and optimization. Data stored on the SD card can be transferred to a computer for further analysis using data analysis software or custom applications, providing meaningful representation of trends and insights into system operation. The system also features an OLED display for real-time feedback on essential parameters, including solar irradiance, water level, and pump status. Furthermore, the integration of user prompts and GSM communication enables remote monitoring and control, empowering users to inquire about system status and remotely activate or deactivate the pump through SMS commands. The system offers a robust and adaptable solution for efficient management and maintenance of the solar-powered water pumping system in Sukkur, Pakistan.
