GSTM1 and GSTT1 Genetic Polymorphisms and Breast Cancer Risk in Selected Filipino Cases

Abstract: Background:The association of genetic polymorphisms with cancer development has been shown to be race- and tumor site-specific. Thus, this study aimed to determine whether polymorphisms in the GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes are associated with breast cancer among selected Filipinos. Methods:A total of 136 histologically confirmed breast cancer cases were age- and sex-matched with 136 clinically healthy controls. Genomic DNA extracted from blood samples of participants were screened for GSTM1 and GSTT1 genetic polymorph… Show more

“…However, our data demonstrated that GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms were not significantly associated with the risk of breast cancer. Consistent with our results, reports from Philippines (43) and Mexico (44) also suggested that the deletion of GSTM1 and GSTT1 may not be risk factors for breast cancer susceptibility. Possible explanation for the different results of different studies might be that the genetic variability and lifestyle habits varied from different races (45) .…”

“…Several studies reported that rs1042522 may play a significant role in BC development. However, studies have revealed controversial results regarding relationship between polymorphism genotypes and BC [22,23]. In our study, this polymorphism did not show any significant associations with studied BC characteristics and patient survival.…”

“…Mutations of this gene leads to unstable the free radicals. These free radicals damage the cells and converts into cancerous cells [ 62 ]. Gene 3- IGFBP5: It is an Insulin-like protein-binding growth factor that plays a vital role in cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis.…”
