GTAW of Zinc-Coated Steel and Aluminum Alloy

Abstract: Abstract. In this study, effect of zinc-coated layer on steel sheet of dissimilar metals welding between SCGA270C steel and A5052 aluminum alloy by GTAW was investigated. In the experiments, two types of self-brazing welding; 1) welding between non-zinc-coated steel/aluminum alloy, and 2) welding between zinc-coated steel/aluminum alloy, were carried out. The lap joint configuration in which steel was lying on top of aluminum alloy was applied. From the results of zinc-coated steel case, the reaction between t… Show more

“…The most important challenge when bonding dissimilar aluminum-steel systems is the formation of FexAly type intermetallic compounds (IMC); however, their brittle character results in detriment of important mechanical properties such as tensile strength and ductility [10], [11]. Another challenge is to face, the lack of prior expertise in welding significantly make difficult the consolidation process to obtain dissimilar welded joints.…”

“…However, another issue shows up after the welding: the galvanic corrosion that occurs between these different materials in contact [7]. Borrisutthekul and et al(2018), investigated effect of zinc-coated layer on steel sheet of dissimilar metals welding between SCGA270C steel and A5052 aluminum alloy by GTAW [8]. In this study, AA7075 aluminum alloy and galvanized steel are welded by cold metal transfer method.…”

“…1,6 These dissimilarities in thermophysical, chemical, and mechanical properties of Al-steel materials lead to disadvantages such as formation of intermetallic compounds (IMCs), heat-affected zone (HAZ), metallurgical precipitation, defects, distortion, and deterioration of mechanical joint properties. 1,3,6,9,10 Considering these factors, joining processes such as brazing, [11][12][13] gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), 14,15 gas metal arc welding, 16,17 metal inert gas welding, 18 laser welding, 14,[19][20][21][22] hybrid welding, [23][24][25][26] resistance spot welding, [27][28][29] explosive welding, 30 magnetic pulse welding, 31,32 cold metal transfer, 33,34 ultrasonic welding, 35 and friction-based welding processes 1,3,6 are investigated in different literature studies. Out of all these processes, arc welding processes are viewed as nonrecommended processes to obtain successful dissimilar Al-steel welds based on their process aspects of melting and solidification caused by arc.…”
