Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study is to highlight the role of qualitative research in service research. This study discusses what qualitative research is, what role it has in service research and what interest, rigor, relevance and richness mean for qualitative service research. Design/methodology/approach This study examines the most common qualitative research methods and discusses interest, rigor, relevance and richness as key characteristics of qualitative research. “…Qualitative research is useful in an emerging empirical context (Wittel et al , 2020) and often uses existing theory as a basis for interpreting data, to gain new insights to the phenomenon under investigation (Bansal and Corley, 2012). Since our study seeks to uncover signals currently used by service providers to communicate safety to consumers, we use content analysis as elaborated below (Abbott and McKinney, 2013).…”

“…The organic search generated another 108 articles with a high level of example redundancy. Wittel et al (2020, p. 3) emphasize that a “researcher should try to achieve saturation of information” even though this “is difficult to achieve”. We agree and believe that this applies even more so in the case of a rapidly evolving empirical context such as ours.…”

“…Traditionally, service and TSR researchers have relied on well-known methodologies, such as surveys, experimental design, meta-analysis and qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews and case studies (Larivière and Kandampully, 2019; Witell et al , 2020). However, these traditional research methods are limited and problematic for vulnerable groups (Baker et al , 2016; Blocker and Barrios, 2015; Mulder et al , 2015).…”

“…To ensure the intricacies, nuances and insights of real world experiences and perspectives of the issues relating to well-being and vulnerable people, and problems relating to services in general, there is a need to adopt innovative research methodologies (Azzari and Baker, 2020; Dodds et al , 2018; Finsterwalder and Kuppelwieser, 2020). Recent special issues advocating novel research methods for service researchers' highlights this need (see Larivière; Kandampully, 2019; Witell et al , 2020). Despite these calls for diverse and innovative methods, there appears to be a gap in the use of online group interviews as a potential methodology, particularly with vulnerable groups.…”
