Guest-occupiable space in the crystalline solid state: a simple rule-of-thumb for predicting occupancy

Abstract: High-throughput analysis of the guest-occupiable space of nearly 40 000 solvates involving 20 different solvents yields a mean guest occupancy of 51.1(4)%.

“…These binding sites are impacted by the presence of amino groups and enable coadsorption of CO 2 and C 2 H 2 , thanks to high affinity towards both gases. This study once again illustrates how apparently subtle changes in pore size, [37] shape [38] and chemistry [39] in ultramicroporous materials can profoundly impact selectivity and separation performances, [11a, 17] in this case enabling single‐step production of polymer grade C 2 H 4 by removing both C 2 H 2 and CO 2 from a ternary C2‐CO 2 gas mixture.…”

“…65 The shape and size of this inner cavity volume permit the preclusion of several potential guests according to earlier reports on space filling, in which a packing coefficient (= V guest /V cavitiy ) of 55 ± 9% for nonpolar interactions and 63 ± 9% for dipolar host-guest contacts was estimated. [66][67][68] Additional considerations involve the ratio between the gate diameter and the central diameter. Whereas this ratio for fully open [n]CPPs is equal to 1.00, we estimated values of 0.64 and 0.67 for 1[4] and 1 [5], respectively, which are considerably smaller.…”
