Guided implant surgery risks and their prevention

Abstract: Ideal implant placement may reduce surgical complications, such as nerve injury and lingual cortical plate perforation, and minimize the likelihood of functional and prosthetic compromises. Guided implant surgery (GIS) has been used as the means to achieve ideal implant placement. GIS refers to the process of digital planning, custom‐guide fabrication, and implant placement using the custom guide and an implant system–specific guided surgery kit. GIS includes numerous additional steps beyond the initial prosth… Show more

“…A sensor associated with the stereolithographic guide could reduce and even eliminate the risks and deviations reported in the literature. 17 It is necessary to emphasize that this was the first experiment related to a digital reflectance sensor for implant installation. Several difficulties appeared during the use of the sensor, among them the delay in display the accurate distance of the drill bit, so the expected alarm to avoid perforations may be late.…”

“…On the opposite, the choice of guided surgery allows you to completely plan the intervention. Even with the intrinsic limits of this method, for example the precision of CBCT exams or the precision of the surgical masks, there is no doubt that the operations can be performed with a clearly superior reproducibility of some parameters [ 30 , 36 ]. Choosing a digital prosthetic flow allows more advantages.…”

“…Guided surgery is helpful with adequate diagnostics but also needs to be in the hands of well‐trained clinicians. Tatakis et al presented, in this volume of Periodontology 2000 , the pros and cons of these surgical modalities and emphasized the guidelines for use.…”
