Gut Microbial Signatures in Sporadic and Hereditary Colorectal Cancer

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death and the third most common cancer in the world. Depending on the origin of the mutation, colorectal carcinomas are classified as sporadic or hereditary. Cancers derived from mutations appearing during life, affecting individual cells and their descendants, are called sporadic and account for almost 95% of the CRCs. Less than 5% of CRC cases result from constitutional mutations conferring a very high risk of developing cancer. Screen… Show more

“…Numerous data support that altered microbiota communities can modulate the efficacy of anticancer drugs via mediating or modifying the environmental factors of colon cancer ( Nakatsu et al, 2015 ; Mori and Pasca, 2021 ). The proportional imbalance between pathogenic and beneficial bacteria aggravates intestinal mucositis.…”

“…In FAP, there are associations with Bacteroides fragilis and Escherichia coli [ 46 ]. The role these microbes play in hereditary syndromes is unclear, and the lack of studies looking to understand this represents a massive gap in research and an opportunity to improve screening and prevention in these high-risk patients [ 106 ].…”

“…Colorectal cancer (CRC) is third in terms of incidence and second in terms of mortality worldwide. It is the most common type of cancer in men, after lung and prostate cancers, and the second most common type of cancer in women after breast cancer [139]. CRC is a disease of developed countries, because the main factors that impact tumor development are obesity, sedentary lifestyle, tobacco smoking, and the consumption of red meat and alcohol [140].…”
