H [CSC]i[/CSC]–bright Galaxies in the Southern Zone of Avoidance

Abstract: A blind survey for H I bright galaxies in the southern Zone of Avoidance, (212 • ≤ ℓ ≤ 36 • , |b| ≤ 5 • ), has been made with the 21 cm multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64 m radiotelescope. The survey, sensitive to normal spiral galaxies to a distance of ∼ 40 Mpc and more nearby dwarfs, detected 110 galaxies. Of these, 67 have no counterparts cataloged in the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database. In general, the uncataloged galaxies lie behind thicker obscuration than do the cataloged objects. All of the newly-dis… Show more

“…HIPASS J0731-69; Ryder et al 2001). In addition, Parkes HI multibeam surveys of the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) have catalogued more than 1000 galaxies (Staveley-Smith et al 1998;Henning et al 2000;Juraszek et al 2000;Donley et al 2005). Compact and extended populations of Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) were catalogued by Putman et al (2002).…”

“…The HI searches for galaxies in the optical Zone of Avoidance carried out by, among others, Henning et al (1998) in the north, and by Henning et al (2000) and Juraszek (2000) in the south, were confined to |b| < 5…”

“…Sorar (1994) and Spitzak & Schneider (1998) found optical counterparts to all their H i detections, and Rosenberg & Schneider (2000) find that most of their detections have an optical counterpart, although some have very low surface brightness. In addition, blind H i surveys have been conducted through the optically obscured zone of avoidance (ZOA; Henning et al 2000). Such surveys are important in determining the local large-scale structure, which is impossible to do optically in this region (Juraszek et al 2000).…”
