H2Evolution from Water on Modified Cu2ZnSnS4Photoelectrode under Solar Light

Abstract: Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) thin films were investigated as photoelectrodes for H 2 evolution from water under solar light. Surface modifications with Pt, CdS, and TiO 2 enhanced the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of CZTS thin film electrode for H 2 production from water by three orders of magnitude to 40% ( ¼ 600 nm). The solar energy conversion efficiency in H 2 production using modified CZTS reached 1.2%. Our results demonstrate that the photoelectrochemical properties of CZTS were significantly i… Show more

“…[19,30,[46][47][48] The volume of the CBD solution was 50 mL, and it contained 14 wt% of ammonia (Wako), 25 × 10 −3 m of Cd(CH 3 COO) 2 , (Kanto, 98.0%), and 0.375 m of SC(NH 2 ) 2 (Kanto, 98.0%). During the deposition period of 14 min, the bath temperature was gradually increased from room temperature to typically 326 K over the span of about 8 min.…”

“…These studies suggest that TiO 2 operates as a robust protective layer preventing the direct contact of the chalcopyrite/CdS with the electrolyte. [ 15,73 ] Additionally, its deeper valence band is believed to induce a larger electrostatic repulsion of holes from the surface, therefore reducing surface recombination. [ 74 ] However, despite the benefi cial effects of TiO 2 , it is not an especially active catalyst for the water reduction reaction.…”

“…It also should be noted that p-type Cu2ZnSnS4, which has a kesterite structure, has been investigated as a photocathode, and shows photocurrent values comparable to those of chalcopyrite materials [50][51][52]. This material is attractive in that it is made of Earth-abundant and low-toxicity elements.…”
