Habitat and conservation status of molinillo (Magnolia sambuensis) and laurel arenillo (Magnolia katiorum), two endangered species from the lowland, Colombia

Abstract: The conservation of the Magnoliaceae family is considered a priority worldwide, especially in Colombia, where all of its 36 species are seriously endangered while frustratingly little is known about their ecology. We therefore, assessed some ecological aspects of two lowland forest species: laurel arenillo (Magnolia katiorum) and molinillo (M. sambuensis). The first is an endemic species of the Urabá region in northwestern Colombia, and the second is distributed from Panama to Colombia along the Chocó Biogeogr… Show more

“…Additionally, M. lucida , with a straight trunk and an excellent material structure, is a valued timber species in Southeast Yunnan, China [ 1 , 3 ]. However, owing to the destruction of its habitat, overdevelopment, and low natural regeneration [ 4 , 5 ], M. lucida is classified as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature [ 6 ]. Thus, there is an urgent need to protect and utilize M. lucida using effective methods.…”

“…One of the least-known aspects related to the current conservation status of the Colombian species is their reproductive phenology. Flower bud abortion, low year-round seed production, and low seedling recruitment (L opez-A, Bock, & Bedoya, 2008;G omez, 2010;Serna-Gonz alez & Urrego-Giraldo, 2016), as well as the effects of climatic seasonality on their reproduction, are all issues that have been poorly characterized and are of concern. Thus, improvement of this knowledge is needed to develop successful conservation efforts.…”

“…Studies on tropical plant phenology have shown the influence of rainfall, light availability, and temperature on the production of leaves and reproductive structures (Pau, Cordell, Ostertag, Inman, & Sack, 2020). Notably, reproductive phenology and floral cycles of Colombian Magnolia species have not been fully recorded (Serna-Gonz alez & Urrego-Giraldo, 2016). In this study, we chose two endangered Colombian Magnolia species that cohabit in Andean remnant cloud forests.…”
