Habitat requirements of the Charetum intermediae phytocoenoses in lakes of western Poland

Abstract: Abstract:The study presents habitat and phytosociological analyses of the Chara intermedia phytocenoses, rare described in Europe. 16 physico-chemical water parameters were analysed, coming from the samples taken in 20 phytocenoses of 13 lakes located in western Poland. The analysed community appeared in naturally shallow lakes representing last stages of the disappearance of glacial water basins. The study attempts to estimate the bioindicative value of the charophyta meadow Charetum intermediae in relation t… Show more

“…Typically, these communities develop as species-poor carpets, usually being monospecific stands or with minor, if any, contributions of other macrophyte species, and cover up to 100% of the stand surface (Mulderij, 2006;Gąbka et al, 2007;Pełechaty et al, 2010). C. tomentosa commonly forms such compact monospecific submerged meadows.…”

“…Charophyte establishment is limited by reduced light conditions (de Winton et al, 2004). Stoneworts can occur in shallow humic lakes if they grow up to the water surface (Gąbka et al, 2007). These results show that the occurrence of charophytes can be limited mainly by light availability affected by DOC.…”

“…The studies of the phytoplankton biomass, chlorophyll-a concentration and physicochemical parameters of the water in Lake Rogóźno were carried out during the dry (2003( -2006 and wet periods (2007. The water samples were collected monthly (June-August) in 2003, 2005-2007, 2010 and 2013, excluding water hardness, which was determined in 2003, 2008 and 2013.…”

“…pond near the Borówie Lake, the pond at Owińska Struga and the peat pond near Sławica). This species displays a relatively broad trophic tolerance (GąB-Ka 2009, urbaniaK & GąBka 2014), whereas it may be noted that the presence of C. intermedia was associated with shallow bodies situated in forest surroundings whose waters were coloured by humic substances (shallow humotrophic lakes, GąBka et al 2007).…”
