New conceptual categories to attend to the new relationships of domination found in Latin America

“…One example of this is the use of empowerment as a notion in social welfare rhetorics in the form of 'empowering the other', or its erasure from systemic-structural analysis to use it in individualistic statements, such as the 'empowerment of self-esteem' (García and Rendueles, 2017). This is an unequivocal example of the phenomenon developed by Laclau, since it is an empty signifier inscribed within a different or opposed ideological and hegemonic project.…”

García and Rendueles (2017) argue that the concepts of empowerment and awareness are currently related in a very ambiguous way, since their content has been decollectivised and psychologised. Laclau (2004, cited in Montero, 2012) explains that political meanings in discursive struggles tend not to establish fixed signifiers on account of their polysemy of meanings.…”

Subscribing to the approach taken by García and Rendueles (2017), it is not about expanding participation but about slotting it into the frameworks of formal governance.…”
