Hackathons in software engineering education

Abstract: Hackathons are currently a hot topic in industrial learning settings. Like intensive collaborative courses (e.g. code camps), hackathons have been shown to be successful tools for learning. However, current research has failed to adequately compare the two approaches with respect to who benefits, which stakeholders are involved, and what the practical arrangement differences are. We used a literature review, our own multi-year learning experiences, and written and interview material from students and industry … Show more

“…Considering the findings, research can e.g., offer new know-how for digital design process tools and support mass customization considerations; companies might have with the newest business models [50,51]. And considering the newest technologies, also innovation seeding options like collaborative hackathons [34,36,43], capstone courses [39] and digital citizen science solutions [55] should be given a tough, as these methods have also shown productivity [40] sustainability context. The research can also push newest technologies like Artificial Intelligence [52,53] and industry 4.0 technologies [22] to forms that help companies produce new circularity and sustainability enhancing products and services.…”

“…• private waste processing companies • sustainability calculations consultation companies • municipalities Also, to speed up the software system and solution development efforts, authors would like to suggest trust [50] and knowledge sharing based industry-university collaboration models. For example models like hackathons [44][45][46], capstone courses [47], front-end innovation process formalization methods [51], plus digital citizen science [55] and community-based monitoring programs [48] as solution options to boost the design of environmentally more sustainable solutions [59].…”

“…Multi-criteria tool is commonly used to build different scenarios for decision making to increase effectiveness to save time and transparency to decision making process [24,25]. Interestingly enough, in citizen side, municipalities have been networking with Higher educational units to use hackathons [26,27] as a tool to build educational and gamified solutions to boost up citizen waste recycling activities [28]. Seems like there is a need for municipalities to do similar thing in decision making level to educate the decision makers on sustainability investment, but maybe before going too much on that direction, research should be made on the effects of this sort of activities, into the organization culture on that sort of decision making level [29] and learn from SME size, how they face changes when business models are considered to be changed or big investments are considered.…”
