Haematobiochemical parameters of goats fed tannin rich Psidium guajava and Carissa spinarum against Haemonchus contortus infection in India

Abstract: The antihelminthic properties of tannin-rich plants are being explored as an alternative to chemical drugs to minimise the effects of gastro intestinal nematodes (GIN). The present study was, therefore, conducted to investigate the effect of condensed tannins (CT), obtained from regional tanniferous tree leaves, in the Haemonchus contortus infected goats on the heamatobiochemical parameters to assess the goat health. Twelve adult male goats were randomly divided into three equal groups, namely negative control… Show more

“…The values of the BUN were higher than the normal range (10-20 mg/dl) as reported by Kaneko et al (1997) for goats. Blood urea nitrogen levels are similar to that reported by Jan et al (2015) while working with similar experimental animals. Protein digestion in ruminants results in unused ruminal ammonia being transported to the liver via the portal blood where it is converted to urea.…”

“…RBC and HGB were lower for all four infected groups than the normal ranges of 9.00–15.0 T/L and 90.0–150.0 g/L, respectively [ 48 ]. HGB was higher in Hmix and Zn than C. Increased levels of HGB in goats fed a tannin-rich plant mixture containing condensed tannins (1.96%) were described by Jan et al [ 49 ].…”

“…In addition, anti-helminthic properties towards gastro-intestinal nematodes have been found, as a result of the presence of condensed tannins in the guava plant, which raised the levels of hemoglobin, packed cell volume, total protein, globulin, glucose, and calcium, and lowered the levels of blood urea [103]. …”
