Haematological and histopathological effects of oil from castor seeds (Ricinus communis Linn.) on albino-rats

Abstract: The effects of soxhlet extraction of oil from castor seeds (Ricinus communis Linn) using n-hexane as solvent on hematological and histopathological properties of albino rats was investigated using standard method. The haematological analysis of the animals' blood showed that the extract caused a reduction in the packed cell volume (PCV) from 49.3 to 46.7%. Histopathological analysis of the organs of the animals showed that the extract caused dilation of the sinusoid with less prominent nucleus of the liver, ho… Show more

“…This shows that the A. boonei stem bark powder has slight effect on the liver without any hepatocellular damage since necrosis was not noticed at this concentration for animals. Momoh et al (2012) stated that at low concentration, any substance which have effect such as the one noticed above is generally safe for animal and will not cause any negative effect when used even over a long period of time. The group fed with 10% A. boonei stem bark powder had necrosis which is an indication that this concentrations is not safe for animals.…”

“…This is because; the extract may possess a portion of the ricinoleic acid, the active component of castor oil [11]. Momoh et al [12], showed that neutrophils were higher in the experimental with a value of 30% when compared with that of the control with a value of 27%. Since high neutrophils are an indication of systemic infection on animals, the ill is the cause.…”

“…Standard methods for anti-nutrient screening (phenol, flavonoids, tannins alkaloids and saponins) were employed according to Adewole, et al (2015), Royal Society of Chemistry ( 2002) as modified by (Momoh, et al, 2012), andObadoni andOchuko (2001).…”
