Haematological characteristics predicting susceptibility for ascites. 2. High haematocrit values in juvenile chickens

Abstract: 1. Male broilers of two different genetic stocks, a pure broiler sire line (A) and commercially available Ross broilers (B), were used to study the effect of differences in haematocrit values in 12-d-old chickens on the development of ascitic symptoms. Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FRC) were measured from 2 to 5 weeks of age. Mortality was recorded from 2 to 6 weeks. The birds were kept at a low ambient temperature to stimulate the incidence of ascites. 2. From each stock … Show more

“…Comparable to the effect of pvCO 2 -risk on pO 2 the results showed that there was no consistent relationship between pvCO 2 and haematocrit values at day 12. These results are in agreement with findings that an increased susceptibility to ascites is not necessarily linked to high haematocrit values (Buys et al, 1999;Scheele et al, 2003b). After day 12, haematocrit values as indicators for hypoxemia increased steadily during ageing in modern breeds but not in ascites resistant breeds.…”

“…Table 5 also showed that there was a tendency towards a greater haematocrit value of the birds in the ascites treatment from wk 5 and which thereafter was significantly greater than the other three treatments (p<0.05). The highest hematocrits values of the ascetic broilers indicated that a (subjective) rapid compensatory erythropoiesis had been triggered in response to the hypoxaemia [5] , but Luger et al [13] ' report showed that hematocrits was low before the ascetic broiler died, which was different from this result.…”

“…These changes are parts of the syndrome of hypoxaemia [5,12] . The provision of a pellet feed increased body weight gain, Ca, Na, P and total protein concentrations in the plasma, compared with the mash feed.…”
