Haematology and blood chemistry values for several flamingo species

Abstract: SUMMARYReference values for some haematological and plasma chemical values in four species of clinically normal adult flamingos were established for use in avian medicine. The following variables were studied in rosy, greater, Chilean and lesser flamingos: haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration, erythrocyte and leucocyte counts,

Breeding avian females could, however, show high cranial roof may cause changes in the lighting conditions perceived by the pineal and/or other extraretinal receptors and plasma alkaline phosphatase levels related to eggshell formation (Bell 1971;Sturkie 1986;de le Court et al 1995), but egg laying may be involved in the endocrine events associated with puberty onset and acquisition of adult plumage.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, there have been no studies of the hematology or blood chemistry data in individuals of the Bucerotidae family. The hematocrit values for these hornbills lie within the ranges described for captive individuals of other avian orders, such as storks [Celdra´n et al, 1994], raptors [Ferrer et al, 1987;Herna´ndez et al, 1990], or flamingos [Peinado et al, 1992].…”
