Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in Europe 2002. Changes in indication and impact of team density. A report of the EBMT activity survey

Abstract: Summary:This 2002 European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) activity survey concentrates on current status, increase and decrease in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) activity in Europe and investigates the association of transplant rates with team density. In 2002, there were 20 207 HSCT, 6915 allogeneic (34%), 13 292 autologous (66%) and 3947 additional re-or multiple transplants collected from 586 centres in 39 European countries. Main indications were leukaemias (6523 (32%; 7… Show more

“…7,11 A similar survey has been annually reported by the EBMT since 1990 to illustrate the trends of HSCT in European countries in an elegant way. 4,[25][26][27]29,[35][36][37] Although this study elucidated several differences, such as the proportion of allogeneic and autologous HSCTs between Europe and Asia, there were many similarities in the trends of HSCTs in both regions. This suggests that similar clinical decisions have been made globally in the practice of HSCT, probably because of the rapid spread of information about the technology and the outcome of HSCT.…”

“…1 HDT is associated with both acute and long-term toxicities. The use of high-dose CY in the conditioning regimens has been considered to be the main cause of cardiac toxicity of HDT protocols.…”

“…11 These data would suggest that US has one of the highest rates of HSCTs performed per capita, yet less than 2% of patients will participate in RCTs. Transplant studies in the US have focused on issues other than the comparison of transplant to conventional therapies.…”
