Haematuria; a late complication of TURP?

Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the cause of haematuria for patients that had previously undergone a TURP. One hundred patients were identified in a walk-in haematuria clinic as having been treated by TURP and were prospectively investigated for the cause of bleeding. Prostate regrowth was the diagnosis in 63% of cases. A diagnosis of malignancy was made for 23.5% of these patients. We have confirmed the hypothesis that for patients who present with haematuria after a TURP, the prostate is the usual sou… Show more

“…Based on their findings, they considered hematuria as a late complication of TURP. [ 21 ] Similarly, Wang et al . noted that the primary reason for admission in patients with recurrent BPH (post-TURP) was severe hematuria (44.4%).…”

“…For the 42 studies , quality was 'good' in eight [20,21,[24][25][26]36,53,57], 'fair' in 22 [23,27,29,[31][32][33]37,38,40,41,43,47,49,51,52,[54][55][56][58][59][60][61] and 'poor' in 12 studies [22,28,30,34,35,39,42,[44][45][46]48,50]. As studies rated of 'good' quality were deemed to have low bias, we wanted to investigate the prostate cancer prevalence specifically for these studies [20,21,[24][25][26]36,53,57].…”

“…Almost all included studies reported performing either cystoscopy or imaging, or both, but as a DRE and PSA test are the initial clinical tests for the evaluation of prostate cancer, we enumerated the prostate cancer prevalence for studies that clearly described performing a DRE or PSA test on all included men (n = 11) [21][22][23][24]26,29,32,33,38,44,58]. In these 11 studies, the pooled prevalence (95% CI) of prostate cancer was 3.1% (1.9-4.5%; Fig.…”

“…The tissue on the cut surface forms an eschar, whose organisational structure is fuzzy, leading to injury even perforation of the surgical capsule. In addition, the eschar may bring about secondary haemorrhage (15) after shedding and repeated haematuria after the operation. And the high temperature of TURP can cause urethral burn and postoperative urethral stricture (16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21).…”
