Haemostatic trends in normal pregnancy in Chinese women

Abstract: Hacmostatic trends during the course of normal prcgnancy were studied in 256 Chinese women at the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Kandang Kerbau Hospital in Singapore. using 282 nonpregnant women for comparison. Fibrinogen, factor VIIIC, VIIIR:Ag, factor X and a,-antitrypsin all rose above the mean non-pregnant levels throughout pregnancy; factor I1 did not show a marked deviation whereas factor V rose in the first and second trimesters and fell to a non-pregnant level in the third trimest… Show more

“…In PE and normal pregnancy, increased concen trations of intravascular coagulation markers like TAT complex and D-dimer indicate an ongoing compensated low grade intravascular coagulation. Intravascular coagu lation has been suggested to begin in vivo in early preg nancy [22,23], and our present study could not show any differences in this between PE and pregnancy. Raised p-TG in PE and normal pregnancy results from increased platelet activation.…”

“…There were no statistical differences in D-dimer, P-TG, TAT complexes and plate let numbers in both the pre-eclamptic groups when com pared with matched normal pregnant subjects. These lev els were above the non-pregnant subjects', except for platelet numbers which were within the range seen in nor mal pregnancy [23],…”

“…Most studies reported hemostatic activity during pregnancy (1)(2)(3)(4). Enhanced coagulation activation in early pregnancy has been suggested in Caucasians (1) and Asians (4); and in Asians increased fibrinolytic activity and fibrinolytic inhibitors were found in late pregnancy (4,5) while others have reported decreased fibrinolytic activity in Caucasians (6,7).…”

“…Profound alterations in the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems occur during pregnancy and these changes enhanced a state of hypercoagulability in the Caucasians [6,32] and ethnic Chinese women [19]. Fibrinolysis and its inhibitors, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1/2 (PAI-1/2) were also increased during pregnancy which reached maximum levels at the late third trimester or during labor [3,8,9] and in Asians [20,26].…”
