Hair Mercury Levels Detection in Fishermen from Sicily (Italy) by ICP-MS Method after Microwave-Assisted Digestion

Abstract: A number of ninety-six hair samples from Sicilian fishermen were examined for total mercury detection by an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. The mercury levels obtained were compared with mercury levels of 96 hair samples from a control group, in order to assess potential exposure to heavy metals of Sicilian fishermen due to fish consumption and closeness to industrial activities. Furthermore, the mercury levels obtained from hair samples were sorted by sampling area in order to ve… Show more

“…Equipment: Agilent 8800 ICP-QQQ (ICP-MS/MS analysis system will be used in Egypt for measuring: Lead, Mercury and Aluminum. It is similar to and coping with international standards exactly the same as Micro Trace Metal Lab in Germany (Amin et al, 2011;Giangrosso et al, 2016). Table (2) shows that levels of aluminum, mercury and lead were much higher among cases than among controls with high statistical significance difference between them (p< 0.05).…”

“…Figure 4 shows that the variances of mercury concentrations in hair specimens were quite large in both exposed groups and also control group that was also described in Table 2. These led to the highest of mercury concentration being unable to be correlated to particular kind of work since the presence of mercury in hair specimen is strongly attributed to environmental exposure, lifestyle, and dietary habits [29,30]. Dietary habits, especially fish consumption, is considered to be the main source of mercury exposure particularly in the form of methyl mercury [31,32].…”

“…Fish accumulate Hg through the consumption of water and aquatic organisms and slow elimination of Hg, combined with continuous exposure, causes a significant accumulation of Hg along the food chain [ 5 ]. Dietary fish consumption is the main route of human exposure to Hg, a powerful neurotoxin that can significantly compromise human health [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. The health risks related to the consumption of fish contaminated with Hg are subject to the regulation introduced by many countries and government agencies.…”
