Hair-Pulling Does Not Necessarily Serve an Emotion Regulation Function in Adults With Trichotillomania

Abstract: Background: Trichotillomania (TTM) has been associated with childhood trauma and perceived stress. While it has been hypothesized that hair-pulling regulate negative emotions, the relationship between childhood trauma, perceived stress, emotion regulation, and hair-pulling has not been well-studied.Methods: Fifty-six adults with TTM and 31 healthy controls completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Hair-pulling severity… Show more

“…The ER model posits that underlying deficits in the various components of ER, such as emotional processing, may contribute to persistent and impairing hair pulling (Alexander, 2020). Nevertheless, other studies have shown no association between ER and hair-pulling severity (Lochner et al, 2021). Hence, understanding the role of emotional dysregulation in the maintenance of TTM symptomatology is vital to tailoring treatment approaches.…”

“…Further evidence suggests that these deficits can play a role in trichotillomania (Curley et al, 2016;Diefenbach et al, 2008;Roberts et al, 2013;Shusterman et al, 2009). Additionally, emotion regulation may play a more important role in focused pulling than in automatic pulling (Arabatzoudis et al, 2017;Siwiec & McBride, 2016), although a recent study found that emotion dysregulation had little impact on symptom severity as measured by the MGH-HPS (Lochner et al, 2021).…”
