A compact and planar broadband circularly polarized (CP) eighth-mode substrate integrated waveguide (EMSIW) antenna is proposed in this paper. An isosceles right triangular waveguide with one electric sidewall (located on one of its catheti) and two magnetic sidewalls (located on the other two edges of the triangle) is presented to investigate the characteristics of the EMSIW. The closed-form mode solutions of the electromagnetic field components and the cut-off frequencies are derived for all propagating modes in this triangular waveguide. The simulated electromagnetic field distribution is consistent with the analytical results. The resonant frequencies of the EMSIW cavity are then determined. A CP antenna consisting of four EMSIW elements is designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of the antenna is 21.6% from 4.72 to 5.86 GHz. Within this frequency range, the measured reflection coefficient is below −10 dB, and the measured peak gain in circular polarization at broadside is 6.89 dBic at 5.1 GHz.

In a hospital environment, continuous respiratory monitoring is important. It could reduce mortality incidents such as in central sleep apnea. Remote monitoring can be achieved using electromagnetic (EM) waves. Experimental EM systems use horn and patch antennas which do not offer low-profile or wide bandwidth features. This thesis proposes a substrateintegrated waveguide based antenna in respiratory monitoring.A leaky-wave array antenna is designed and fabricated. It operates between 8-9 GHz.The antenna size is 300 mm × 55 mm × 0.78 mm. It offers inexpensive beam-scanning ability to scan the bed. The antenna's beam width sufficiently covers a typical hospital bed.The fabricated antenna has measured return loss higher than 10 dB and radiates more than 90% of power in frequency range of interest. Measured main beam scans in E-plane (27• → 57 • ) with frequency. Measured peak gain is higher than 10 dBi.

Abstract-This paper presents the design and fabrication of an antenna based on Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) for intersatellite crosslinks in C-band. The entire antenna consists of two elements of SIW slots array that is fed by a hybrid 3 dB directional coupler. The entire SIW slots array antenna is circularly polarized (CP), and each element has four longitudinal slots. The element's effective field matching is realized with a microstrip to SIW transition. The antenna design has been evaluated with its return loss, gain plot, and radiation pattern characteristics to validate the fabricated antenna. The fabricated prototype antenna radiates a left-handed circularly polarized (LHCP) electromagnetic wave with the peak gain of 5 dB and offers approximately 2% AR bandwidth around 5 GHz.
