“…The first report exposing the relevance of corroles for drug discovery was published in 2000 by introducing a tris-cationic corrole and showing that it is more potent for attenuating tumor progression and metastasis than analogous porphyrins. Considering that the anticancer properties of corroles and corresponding metal complexes have recently been summarized, , only three most recent examples are now outlined. Two of them share a common motif: the introduction of completely lipophilic corroles, which spontaneously form nanoparticles (NPs) when added to aqueous solutions.…”

“…Compared to porphyrin, the corrole photosensitizer has higher 1 O 2 quantum yields because it is less prone to aggregation . In addition, the corrole macrocycle has a direct pyrrole–pyrrole linkage, which makes it more easily metabolized after PDT . Although there have been reports about the synthesis of corrole conjugates for antitumor application such as cyclodextrin, coumarin, amino acid, protein, peptide, and siRNA conjugates, the synthesis of corrole and the chemotherapeutic drug conjugate and its application in chemo-photodynamic combination therapy have not been reported so far.…”

“…π-Extended porphyrinoid dyes have received notable interest due to unique photophysical, structural, and redox properties that lead to panchromatic absorption in the near–infrared (NIR) region. Usually, porphyrin dyes have weak absorption in the red region . The absorption spectra of porphyrinoids are quite flexible and can be easily perturbed by varying β- and/or meso -substituents. Developing fused or conjugated porphyrins is one effective and straightforward methodology for tuning redox and photophysical properties. The HOMO–LUMO gap can easily be decreased by appending the conjugated π-systems with donor−π–acceptor groups. , Recent studies on conjugated porphyrinoids revealed that porphyrin-based dyes with NIR absorption had demonstrated potential applications in nonlinear optics, , photodynamic therapy, OLEDs, molecular wires, and molecular electronics …”
