Halogen-bridged complexes of platinum(II) and their reactions with dimethylformamide

Abstract: Bridged compounds, [Pt(L)Cl2]2 (L = pyridine, picoline, and lutidine) have been prepared from the reactions between K[Pt(L)Cl3] and perchloric acid. The molecular weight measurements indicate that they are dimers in chloroform solutions. When [Pt(L)Cl2]2 is dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF), [Pt(L)(DMF)Cl2] is formed and has been isolated. Infrared and nmr studies have shown that DMF is coordinated to platinum through the oxygen atom.

“…Some preparations of dinuclear complexes of amines, [Pt(m-Cl)Cl(amine)] 2 , are carried out by photochemical decomposition of [PtCl 2 (h 2 -C 2 H 4 )(amine)] 23 or by addition of HClO 4 to K[PtCl 3 (amine)]. 24 Although the lability of nitrile complexes is exploited in several syntheses, a systematic study of RCN substitution on platinum(II) is not present. Since dichlorobisorganonitrile complexes [PtCl 2 (NCR) 2 ] are easily prepared, 25 we have considered that they could be good precursors of [PtCl 2 (NCR)L] derivatives by reaction with various type of ligands L in suitable molar ratios.…”

“…Chloro-bridged dimers of piperidine, aniline, and pyridine derivatives have been reported (3)(4)(5)(6)(7). Courtot et al (5) synthesized a chloro-bridged dimer with a very bulky amine, t-butylamine but were unable to prepare dimers with smaller amines since their method of synthesis is limited.…”
