Haloremediation for Amelioration of Salinity

Abstract: Soil and water salinization is a major problem today. Many crop species do not tolerate this condition. The use of halophytes to remove salt from the soil and water is an emerging strategy. Environmental remediation using biodiversity has been widely used because it is a low cost and easy management technique, compared to chemical and physical amelioration options. Halophytes are tolerant plants capable to accumulate and/or exclude salts using different mechanisms. These plants have anatomical and physiologica… Show more

“…When present at the exact concentrations, salt promotes halophyte vegetative growth while preventing nonhalophyte growth, which reflects the ability of plants to produce different phenotypic traits in response to shifting environmental circumstances (Yuan et al, 2019;Rittirongsakul et al, 2020). In addition, Garcia et al (2020) noted that halophytes can adjust high salt concentrations depending on physiological, environmental, and genetic factors.…”

“…Although halophytes have proven efficient in removing salt from soils, the water bio-desalination concept is novel, and research is still beginning (Sahle-Demessie et al 2019, Garcia et al 2020.…”
