Halotolerant-Koccuria rhizophila (14asp)-Induced Amendment of Salt Stress in Pea Plants by Limiting Na+ Uptake and Elevating Production of Antioxidants

Abstract: Endophytic bacteria are useful for their safe services in plant growth improvement and for ameliorating abiotic and biotic stresses. Salt-tolerant plant-growth-promoting Kocuria rhizophila 14asp (accession number KF 875448) was investigated for its role in pea plants under a saline environment. Salt stress (75 mM and 150 mM NaCl) was subjected to two pea varieties, peas2009 and 9800-10, in a greenhouse under a complete randomized design. Different parameters such as plant growth promotion, relative water conte… Show more

“…Sugars contribute to the up-regulation of growth-related genes with concomitant down-regulation of stress genes, thereby playing dual roles in the regulation of metabolism [98]. Maintaining a high sugar content protects photosystem structures and enhances photosynthetic performance by activation of sucrose synthetase and reduction of sucrose degradation [99,100]. These results indicate the beneficial impact of MYO application in improving tolerance to salinity stress in quinoa plants.…”

“…Formation of red colour circular ring confirm the pro-duction of IAA by the strains (Tahir et al, 2019). For siderophore production the strains were grown in Chrome Azurol medium by following the protocol of Mehmood et al (2021). Formation of yellow and orange colour zones around the colony on CA medium confirms the production of siderophore (Ahmad et al, 2018).…”

“…Once crops are subjected to saline conditions, morphological alterations such as chlorosis, wilting, necrosis, stunted root and shoot development, and ultimately patchy and stunted plant growth take place (Zeeshan et al, 2020). Some of the major physiological and biochemical effects on plants under saline regime include a reduction in the photosynthetic process, variations in transpiration and gaseous exchange via decreasing chlorophyll and carotenoids con-centration, modification of chloroplast ultrastructure and PSII system, lowering stomatal conductance, increased Na+ transport and decreased K + transport leading to ion toxicity (Mehmood et al, 2021). One of the major drawbacks of salinity stress is production of Reactive oxygen species (ROS) (Kerchev and Van Breusegem, 2022).…”

“…Inoculation with a strain of halotolerant Kocuria rhizophila , a Gram-positive bacterium that belongs to the order Actinomycetales , also improved growth and oxidative enzyme activities in pea plants subjected to saline stress. The authors point out that the response was defined by a fine interaction between K. rhizophila and pea genotypes modulated through the antioxidant system [ 164 ].…”
