Hamming Color Code for Dense and Robust One-shot 3D Scanning

Abstract: We propose a novel color code, Hamming color code, designed for rapid 3D shape acquisition using structured light projection. The Hamming color code has several properties which are desirable for practical 3D acquisition as follows. First, the Hamming distance of adjacent colors is always 1, which makes the color detection robust to color blending due to defocusing, subsurface scattering, or chromatic aberration. Second, the substrings of a certain length is guaranteed to be unique. In other words, the Hamming… Show more

“…Therefore, we adapted the traditional SGM algorithm to accommodate this new observation. In practice, a new penalty term is defined, as given in Equation (15), to alleviate this kind of bias. In this case, equal penalties were utilized for unchanged disparities and disparities that change only one pixel.…”

“…Spatially coded SL only demands a single shot, in which the codeword of each pattern feature is determined using its own values, along with those of all adjacent elements surrounding it. Gray level [14], color [15], and geometric shapes [16] are the most frequently adopted pattern element types in spatially coded SL.…”

“…Kawasaki et al [14] proposed a dense 3D reconstruction method using a single color code pattern for fast moving object; an entire shape acquisition system using multiple cameras and projectors [15] is realized based on such method. The 3D scanning system using Hamming color code [16] or De Bruijn sequence [17] are reported for fast and accurate measurement. Some other types light patterns that establish the correspondence using geometric constraints [18,19] are also proposed.…”

“…Structured light based shape reconstruction algorithms are divided into two categories: multi-shot [4,6,15] and single-shot methods [7,14,17]. Multi-shot methods can estimate per-pixel depth map for a wide range of objects using temporal coding of the illumination patterns but require the scene to be stationary during image acquisition.…”
