Handgrip strength as a screening assessment for functional limitations

Abstract: Background: There appears to be an undisputed strong relationship between isometric handgrip strength (HGS) and functional fitness test performance, ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), and mortality, but the extreme diversity in how HGS data are interpreted make it difficult to utilize the assessment in a meaningful way. The present study aimed to simplify this interpretation by establishing a single and meaningful universal HGS cutoff that would inform the test administrator whether or not a… Show more

“…HGS was measured in all patients. It is a reliable screening assessment for functional limitations and strongly correlates with other functional assessments such as 6MWT 23. The 6MWT was recorded for CM patients whereas the HD patients completed the FACIT questionnaire; a measure of fatigue 24.…”

“…The close relationship between the degree of dependence and a patient's physical, mental, and social condition has given rise to a large variety and multitude of tests, scales, and questionnaires, whose objective is to evaluate the physical and mental components of patients with neurodegenerative pathologies. [1][2][3][4] The increase in life expectancy in Spain has led to a growth in the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD), where the annual health expenditure lies between €340.5 million and €715.6 million. 5 Hence, knowing the PD patients' condition is important, with a view to prescribing (low cost) therapeutic exercise interventions, to slow progression of the disease and the level of disability and dependence.…”

“…Knowledge of the evolution of each disease and its response to the different pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments is key for improving patients' quality of life. The close relationship between the degree of dependence and a patient's physical, mental, and social condition has given rise to a large variety and multitude of tests, scales, and questionnaires, whose objective is to evaluate the physical and mental components of patients with neurodegenerative pathologies 1–4…”

“…Among variable PF parameters, hand grip strength (HGS) has been widely used to assess muscular strength of the upper extremity 9 , 10 due to its high reliability and simplicity 11 13 , and is also included in the NFA 100 project 6 . Positive correlations between HGS and other lower-limb strength parameters and aerobic capacity have been shown in some studies, although they were based on small sample sizes 14 16 . Due to its relationship with metabolic diseases 17 19 , cardiopulmonary function 20 , cognitive impairment 21 , mental health 22 and sarcopenia 23 , as well as premature mortality and development of disability 18 , the role of HGS in older adults has been widely emphasized in clinical fields.…”
