Composite web services provide promising prospects for conducting cross-organizational business transactions. Such transactions: are generally complex, require longer processing time, and manipulate financially critical data. It is therefore crucial to ensure stronger reliability, higher throughput and enhanced performance of transactions. In order to meet these requirements, this paper proposes a new commit protocol for managing transactions in composite web services. Specifically, it aims to improve the performance by reducing network delays and the processing time of transactions. The proposed protocol is based on the concept of tentative commit that allows transactions to tentatively commit on the shared data of web services. The tentative commit protocol avoids resource blocking thus improving performance. The proposed protocol is tested through various simulation experiments. The outcomes of these experiments show that the proposed protocol outperforms existing protocols in terms of transaction performance.

Composite Web services need transactional support to guarantee their consistent and reliable execution. Due to the long running and inter-organizational characteristics of Web services, current approaches for transactional Web services composition adopt compensation mechanism to maintain atomicity. A common assumption is that a compensation operation can be applied at any time with no cost. However, compensation operations are typically associated with temporal and cost constraints, which make compensation mechanism problematic in this new environment. To address this problem, we distinguish two types of scheduling for transactional Web services composition: time aware scheduling and cost aware scheduling. We devise several algorithms for scheduling, which can ensure the atomicity of composite services when compensation operations have temporal constraints, and assist composite services to maintain atomicity with minimum compensation cost when compensation operations have cost constraints. We benchmark our algorithms by simulations and the results show that our algorithm decreases the compensation cost and in turn improves the QoS of transactional services composition.

Abstract-This paper presents an approach for modeling and associating Policies to services' based appjalications. It proposes to extend the SOD-M model driven method with (i) the π-SCM, a Policy services' composition meta-model for representing non-functional constraints associated to services' based applications; (ii) the π-PEWS meta-model providing guidelines for expressing the composition and the policies; and, (iii) model to model and model to text transformation rules for semi-automatizing the implementation of reliable services' compositions. As will be shown within our environment implementing these meta models and rules, one may represent both systems' cross-cutting aspects (e.g., exception handling for describing what to do when a service is not available, recovery, persistence aspects) and constraints associated to services, that must be respected for using them (e.g., the fact that a service requires an authentication protocol for executing a method).
