“…Previous studies have shown that Galgos have similar haematological values than those found in Greyhounds (MesaSanchez et al 2012); however, they have different electrolyte concentrations, blood gas values, acid-base balance and prevalence of dog erithrocyte antigen 1.1, compared with those previously described in Greyhounds (Mesa-Sanchez et al 2012, 2014. Interestingly, Galgos also have slightly higher haptoglobin concentration than the general population of dogs, in contrast to Greyhounds, which have undetectable haptoglobin levels (Zaldívar-López et al 2012). As Galgos have higher haptoglobin than Greyhounds and other breeds, and this protein migrates in the α-globulin fraction, the authors hypothesised that Galgos have breed-specific differences in serum protein electrophoresis, but these differences are not necessarily the same previously described in Greyhounds.…”

“…A low α2-globulin concentration has also been described in Greyhounds (Fayos et al 2005), and a low concentration of haptoglobin has been proposed to explain this feature in this breed (Couto et al 2009). However, a recent study showed that Galgos have slightly higher haptoglobin concentration than the general population of dogs, in contrast to Greyhounds, which have undetectable haptoglobin levels (Zaldívar-López et al 2012). Therefore, further studies in Galgos are necessary to identify the individual proteins associated with the loprotein w α2-globulin concentration, and its clinical significance.…”
