Hardness and Elastic Modulus on Six-Fold Symmetry Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract: The chemical synthesis of gold nanoparticles (NP) by using gold (III) chloride trihydrate (HAuCl∙3H2O) and sodium citrate as a reducing agent in aqueous conditions at 100 °C is presented here. Gold nanoparticles areformed by a galvanic replacement mechanism as described by Lee and Messiel. Morphology of gold-NP was analyzed by way of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy; results indicate a six-fold icosahedral symmetry with an average size distribution of 22 nm. In order to understand the mechanica… Show more

“…While the central stress localization observed in MD might be overstated by the blunting process symmetries, we believe that more off-centre or sub-surface homogeneous nucleation events might happen in experimental samples as e.g. γ' precipitates [24,25], Au [19,55] and Ag [56] NPs as well as Si NCs [33] which are known to exhibit rounded corners and vertices. In this context, supplementary experimental investigations are required to verify the emergence of homogeneous nucleation events during the compression of blunt nano-objects.…”

“…These particles have an elastic modulus ranging between 1–10 kPa and are known to be highly deformable under external stimuli such as pH, temperature, and osmotic pressure 2123 . The diffusion coefficient of these NPs in agarose gels was compared to that of hard NPs (elastic moduli in the GPa range) made of polystyrene 24 (PS) or gold 25 (Au) of similar hydrodynamic radius.…”

“…The mechanical properties of the fabricated nanocomposite are predicted by micromechanical modeling using a RVE cube. The material behavior of Au is assumed as a linear elastic behavior with the tensile modulus of 100 GPa [ 45 ], Poisson’s ratio of 0.42 [ 46 ], and density of 19,320 kg/m 3 [ 47 ]. Since elastic behavior is studied in this work, only elastic properties are considered for the PVDF phase.…”
