Harmonic Langmuir waves. III. Vlasov simulation

Abstract: Generation of harmonic Langmuir modes during beam–plasma interaction is studied by means of nonlinear theoretical calculations and computer simulations. The present Vlasov simulation of multiple harmonic Langmuir modes (up to 12th harmonics), generalizes the previously available simulations which were restricted to the second harmonic only. The frequency-wave-number spectrum obtained by taking the Fourier transformation of simulated electric field both in time and space shows an excellent agreement with the th… Show more

“…Recently, however, a theory of harmonic generation in turbulent plasmas was developed by the author and his colleagues (Yoon, 2000;Gaelzer et al, 2002Gaelzer et al, , 2003Yoon et al, 2003;Umeda et al, 2003), in which these modes are considered as eigenmodes of nonlinear plasma system. This approach was prompted by recent simulations (Schriver et al, 2000;Kasaba et al, 2001) which show that harmonic modes persist even in late nonlinear phase when the coherent phase space structure is no longer apparent, and when the plasma has entered a stage which can be genuinely characterized by random-phases.…”

“…The work of Yoon et al (2003) was supplemented by numerical Vlasov simulations made by Umeda et al (2003) which were used to make a concrete comparison with the theoretical dispersion curves. Gaelzer et al (2003) formulated and numerically solved the theoretical wave and particle kinetic equations.…”

“…Electron phase-space-density holes (e.g. Berk and Roberts, 1967) or electrostatic solitary waves (Matsumoto et al, 1994) are coherent nonlinear electrostatic structures, while harmonic Langmuir waves and Langmuir wave packets have an incoherent quasi-power-law wavenumber spectrum which indicate a turbulent feature Gaelzer et al, 2003;Umeda et al, 2003;Umeda, 2006;Silin et al, 2007). The present study is aimed at the generation of amplitude-modulated Langmuir waves and Langmuir wave packets which is called a Langmuir turbulence in space plasmas.…”
