Integration of solar PV into the grid poses many challenges in the power system. One such serious challenge is harmonics penetration into the system. Harmonics are generated by the solar PV and the associated power electronics circuitry. Moreover, the loads connected to the distribution system are usually nonlinear and harmonic rich in nature. Therefore, a lot of harmonics gets introduced into the system from the source as well from load ends, and thereby affecting the power system performance. In this paper, harmonic distortion issues associated with solar PV integration are analyzed considering the limits of IEEE 519-1992 standard. The Newton-Raphson algorithm is modified with solar PV integration for harmonic power flow study. The formulated approach is employed to determine the discrete harmonic components, total harmonic distortion (THD) levels, and values of the system power flow variables. The developed approach is tested on a smart radial distribution feeder and the results show that with solar PV integration, the harmonic distortion increases above acceptable limits. In order to have a vision of smart grids for providing clean power supply, the authors feel that there is a serious need to study the issues related to harmonic generation, and further to develop control strategies to eliminate them.

Abstract-A genetic algorithm (GA), in conjunction with fuzzy logic (FL) (approximate reasoning), is proposed for simultaneous improvement of power quality (PQ) and optimal placement and sizing of fixed capacitor banks in distribution networks with nonlinear loads imposing voltage and current harmonics. Economic cost is defined as the objective function and includes the cost of power losses, energy losses, and that of the capacitor banks while the voltage limits, number/size of installed capacitors at each bus, and the PQ limits of harmonic standard IEEE-519 are considered constraints. Fuzzy approximate reasoning is used to calculate the fitness function in order to consider the uncertainty of decision making based on the suitability of constraints (S THD , S V ) and the objective function (cost index) for each chromosome. Simulation results for the 18-bus and 123-bus IEEE distorted networks using the proposed GA-FL approach are presented and compared with those of previous methods. The main contribution is an improved fitness function for GA, capable of improving the objective function while directing the PQ constraints toward the permissible region using fuzzy approximate reasoning. This method leads to computing the (near) global solution with a lower probability of getting stuck at a local optimum and weak dependency on initial conditions while avoiding numerical problems in large systems.Index Terms-Capacitor, fuzzy logic (FL), genetic algorithm (GA), harmonics, placement, power flow and optimization, power quality (PQ), sizing.

SUMMARYThe increased use of power electronic controlled equipment, such as variable speed drives, automated production lines, personal computers and non-linear electronic devices in power systems has given rise to a type of voltage and current waveform distortion called as 'harmonics'. Harmonic can be defined as the undesirable components of a distorted periodic waveform whose frequencies are the integer multiples (non-integer multiples in case of inter-harmonics, and the frequency less than fundamental frequency in case of sub-harmonics) of the fundamental frequency. Presence of these harmonics results in increased losses, equipment heating and loss-of-life, and interference with protection, control and communication circuits as well as customer loads. The research has been underway since very beginning for control of power system harmonics and to supply consumers with reliable and 'clean' fundamental-frequency sinusoidal electric power that does not represent a damaging threat to their equipment. This paper, therefore, reviews the progress made in power system harmonics research and development since its inception. Attempts are also made to highlight the current and future issues involved in the development of quality and reliable electric power technology for future applications. A list of 145 research publications on the subject is also appended for a quick reference.
