Harnessing the power of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) for improving fruit quality traits

Abstract: Hydrogen sulphide (H 2 S) is a gaseous molecule and originates endogenously in plants. It is considered a potential signalling agent in various physiological processes of plants. Numerous reports have examined the role of H 2 S in fruit ripening and in enhancing fruit quality traits. H 2 S coordinates the fruit antioxidant system, fruit ripening phytohormones, such as ethylene and abscisic acid, together with other ripening-related signalling molecules, including nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide. Although man… Show more

“…SA also exerted a remedial effect on the performance of essential oils, mainly at 0.5 mM ( Fatima et al, 2022 ). Plant hormones and antioxidants play a vital role in fruit ripening, quality, and parthenocarpic fruit formation ( Irfan et al, 2021 ; Su et al, 2021 ; Sharif et al, 2022 ; Tayal et al, 2022 ). Under water-stressed conditions, foliar-applied SA reduced MDA and H 2 O 2 contents and ion leakage and increased SOD and POX activities under all irrigation regimes ( Biareh et al, 2022 ).…”

“…However, more commonly, the postharvest life varies from 6 to 16 d ( El-Saka et al., 1995 ; Bayogan et al., 2008 ). Growing conditions, harvest stage, different holding conditions, and criteria used for evaluating inflorescence postharvest life, and conventional methods viz ., cold storage or low temperature, and preservative solutions, could all contribute to extending the vase life of horticulture crops ( Kumari et al., 2022 ; Tayal et al., 2022 ).…”

“…In this process, malic acid metabolism-related enzymes including phospho enol pyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), NADP – dependent malic enzyme (NADP-ME), and NAD-malate dehydrogenase (NAD-MDH) may potentially play a role in fruit malic acid biosynthesis and degradation ( Chen et al., 2009 ; Wu and Chen, 2016 ). The first step in the production of malic acid begins in the cytosol with phospho enol pyruvate (PEP), which is then actively transported into the mitochondria and transformed to oxaloacetate (OAA) by phospho enol pyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) ( Tayal et al., 2022 ). Then, NAD-malate dehydrogenase (NAD-MDH) catalyses the condensation of OAA to produce malic acid.…”
