Harnessing the Power of Social Media to Obtain Biodiversity Data About Cetaceans in a Poorly Monitored Area

Abstract: The study and conservation of cetaceans benefit from systematic studies and non-systematic records about sightings and strandings. However, iEcology (internet ecology) was critical for numerous ecological studies and should be in the toolkit of cetacean ecologists. We hypothesize that iEcology is irreplaceable to obtain diversity data about cetaceans in poorly monitored regions that coincide with touristic destinations, where whale-watching companies go out to sea regularly and post their sightings on social m… Show more

“…From one side, hyper-connectivity through social media and digital platforms can boost citizen/ community science programs by increasing engagement and participation. On the other hand, passive mining of the digital activity of users can complement traditional methods in tracking the occurrence of top predators (Morais et al, 2021;Sbragaglia et al, 2024). The main advantages of emerging digital monitoring are reduced data collection costs and almost real-time data (Lennox et al, 2022).…”

“…In visual communication design, the application of new media has been proven to be essential for optimising the benefits of visual communication, though previous works have not identified a substantial effect of new media applications on visual communication design (Yu et al, 2022). The new media has been termed to contain a particular type of intelligence that is termed as open-source intelligence and studies, like Morais et al (2021) and Awais et al (2022), have discovered that the social media has power beyond the control of rapid human intervention and policy implementation. New media has had a substantial influence on election campaigns, critical policy decisions, and the conduct and activities of political officials (Axford & Huggins, 2001).…”
