Harris lines revisited: Prevalence, comorbidities, and possible etiologies

Abstract: We suggest a reconsideration of HLs as more of a result of normal growth and growth spurts, rather than a pure outcome of nutritional or pathologic stress.

“…The absence of Harris lines suggest that there are other factors responsible for their occurrence than those causing the formation of stress markings in the microstructure of teeth. However, it is possible that Harris lines are more likely a result of normal growth and growth spurts, rather than a pure outcome of nutritional or pathologic stress (Papageorgopoulou et al 2011). Cribra orbitalia indicates that this individual experienced some kind of chronic health problem, not necessarily anemia (Wapler -Crubézy -Schultz 2004), but they are only slightly expressed and pseudopathology cannot be excluded without histological examination.…”

“…When endochondral ossification resumes, the dense mineralized line moves away from the physis [41,42]. We hypothesize that the frequent occurrence of Harris lines in XLH (89%) may be related to periods in which the treatment is less than optimal.…”
