Has the SDC Journal catalysed changes in coloration technology?

Although initially lagging behind the USA, the amount and quality of research and development carried out in the UK can be compared favourably with that from other major world countries. The industrial research association, although a well‐conceived concept to increase research and development efforts that gave significant results, was disappointing for several reasons. A major problem has been the dissemination, exploitation and commercialisation of research results. The activities of research organisations need to be reviewed regularly, as they may have a relatively short lifespan. The intermediate research and technology sector, given adequate support, may be the vehicle for better utilisation of research and development results.

The generation of colour palettes and the production of 'engineered standards' are now mature technologies and are able to shorten significantly the colour selection and manufacturing process, giving improvements in colour quality control and cost reductions. These advances would not have been possible without the development of optimised colour-difference equations, improvements in laboratory dyeing techniques and computer colour matching together with the availability of digital communication.

It has been indicated that much of the practical data for dyeing processes available has never been exploited by the dye application industry, although dye research and development programmes have often identified targets with successful outcomes. Products and processes originated by dye makers have had a major impact on the success of practical dyeing, resulting in improved reproducibility and right-first-time processing. Dyeing theory research has consumed substantial resources invested by dye makers and academic institutions, but many of these studies have failed to yield useful data that could be applied directly in practical dyeing systems. The generation of detailed standard operating procedures has provided the conditions for achieving effective control over the practical dyeing process, an objective that was once thought to be attainable eventually by the refinement of dyeing theories.
