Abstract: Despite the growing body of literature on hashtag feminism in Western contexts, there is still a significant gap in our knowledge of the ways that feminist hashtag movements are developed in authoritarian societies. Moreover, we do not know much about the mechanisms by which a feminist hashtag movement is disrupted, particularly in non-democratic regimes. Drawing on and contributing to the hashtag feminism literature, we undertook a discursive approach to examine #rape on Persian Twitter to address these gaps.… Show more

“…The regime seeks to silence any dissenting voices that do not align with its antagonistic, Islam-focused, and anti-Western discourse. Twitter played a crucial role in the 2009 Green Movement by amplifying the protests and mobilizing citizens (Karimi, 2018).…”

“…At the same time, the academic tradition of the last five years focuses on certain forms of unnecessary censorship, especially on Instagram, which would unfairly allow certain inappropriate posts and censor publications. Progress on this censorship comes from social denunciation and originates advances, albeit slow, in social networks, which would still need more monitoring and surveillance by Meta, and more digital literacy on the part of users so that they detect hate and can proactively denounce and expedite these changes (Bernárdez-Rodal et al, 2021;Díaz-Altozano et al, 2021;Kermani & Hooman, 2022). This theoretical analysis also shows a broad, rigorous, and adequate academic tradition to the problems of each moment: Academic texts do cover many problems and details, even before ethics or legislation.…”

Numerous articles have analyzed how Instagram has focused too much on censoring supposedly erotic photographs (for example, female nipples, breastfeeding, breast cancer surgery), rather than pursuing quasi-pornographic, violent, or covert advertising posts (Chung & Wihbey, 2022;Ging & Garvey, 2018;Kermani & Hooman, 2022;Savolainen et al, 2022).…”

“…Initiated in 2006 by Tarana Burke, it can be described as a “transformative politics of visibility” (Clark‐Parsons, 2019). Through digital campaigns with celebrities to draw attention, #MeToo has had a major impact since 2017, and the movement seems far from over as new petitions and #MeToo scandals flare up at regular intervals (See for exemple El‐Faizy, 2021; Local, 2021; Kermani & Hooman, 2022).…”
