Haunted House: Physical Smart Home Event Verification in the Presence of Compromised Sensors

Abstract: In this article, we verify physical events using data from an ensemble of smart home sensors. This approach both protects against event sensor faults and sophisticated attackers. To validate our system’s performance, we set up a “smart home” in an office environment. We recognize 22 event types using 48 sensors over the course of two weeks. Using data from the physical sensors, we verify the event stream supplied by the event sensors to detect both masking and spoofing attacks. We consider … Show more

“…To mitigate both issues, we suggest that future work investigates how to (semantically) verify measurements by sourcing environmental conditions of nearby sensors or different sensor types. Related work on consumer IoT already considers this research angle [68]. A similar approach could be used to also verify sensors in nearby or previous shipments.…”

“…In smart home, the application of Internet of Things technology is not only radio frequency identification technology, but also sensor network technology. By installing micro devices in the smart home, the smart home in the family can form an integrated sensor network, so that the home has channels for information transmission, storage and operation, which makes it possible to realize the smart home and makes the smart home have a good level of automation and intelligence [4].…”
