Hawai‘i’s food consumption and supply sources: benchmark estimates and measurement issues

Abstract: At the current time, Hawai'i lacks an established set of benchmark estimates on the availability of food for market consumption and its supply sources. This paper serves to fill a persistent gap in the existing literature by providing an estimation framework to map the existing food supply flows from various sources and to determine the various levels of food consumption in Hawai'i. The authors suggest modified measures of food self-sufficiency and import dependency to provide a more accurate assessment on the… Show more

“…The Hawaiian Islands are one of the most geographically isolated areas of the world, and are highly dependent on food imports, with approximately 85% of the food being imported [20][21][22]. Although it has also been said that it would be impossible and impractical for Hawaii to become fully self-sustainable, as it would impose too high of a cost on society, food self-sufficiency is still seen as an important public policy goal that could have multiple benefits for society [21,23].…”

“…To assess food self‐sufficiency and import dependency in Hawai‘i more accurately, modified SSR and IDR measures were proposed. The study on these issues by Loke and Leung () concludes that only 11.6% of available food for consumption in Hawai‘i is sourced from local production, and the remaining 88.4% is sourced from imports.…”

“…A recent benchmark study estimated Hawai‘i's overall food SSR at 15.7% in 2010 and its overall food IDR at 102.5% (Loke and Leung, ). While the IDR exceeding 100% appears counterintuitive, it actually indicates the presence of food imports into Hawai‘i, which are then turned around and reexported to other markets.…”

“…Other studies have been conducted to better understand agricultural markets and stakeholders (Suryanata, 2002). Most recently a study was conducted to set benchmark estimates for Hawaii's food consumption and supply sources, allowing agricultural production for local consumption (Loke and Leung, 2013) to be better targeted.…”
